Mandate

Providing inclusive education services in early childhood development, primary, secondary and tertiary institutions by improving education policies and practices in order to increase equitable access to quality and relevant education for learners with diverse needs in Malawi.

An education system that promotes access, participation and achievement of diverse learners at all levels.

Mission

To provide quality and relevant inclusive education to learners with diverse needs.

Goal

To ensure that learners with diverse needs in Malawi have equitable access to quality education in inclusive settings at all levels through the removal of barriers to learning, participation, attendance and achievement.

Key Functions

  1. To provide policy guidance to Ministry of Education on current inclusive education policies and practices
  2. To coordinate delivery of inclusive education services among stakeholders
  3. To promote early detection of learners with diverse needs and provide support
  4. To initiate development of IE policy and strategies
  5. To disseminate national and international policies related to inclusive education
  6. To monitor and supervise inclusive education activities in order to create an enabling environment for teaching, learning and assessment
  7. To mobilize resources for implementation of inclusive education

Our Projects

NEXTGEN

Funder: USAID

Objectives:

  • To improve NRP instructional approaches and complementary activities
  • To achieve grade level reading proficiency among 30% of Standard 2 learners
  • To improve development and pre-reading skills for English language learners in Standard 1 and 2

Duration: 5 years | Impact Area: Nation-wide

Achievements:

  • Piloted in 2 districts
  • Trained all PEAs
  • Trained all head teachers and deputy head teachers
  • Trained teachers in 20 districts in Malawi
  • Made and distributed supplementary reading materials

Components: Basic education, Pre-primary

Disability Inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education

Funder: UNESCO

Objectives: To train education stakeholders such as teachers, Headteachers and Primary Education Advisors on the importance for adolescents and young people with disabilities and to discuss ways to make Comprehensive Sexuality Education accessible for them.

Impact Area: All six educational divisions (Northern, Central East, Central West, South East, South West, Shire Highlands)

Achievements:

  • Trained 322 Primary Education Advisors across all six education divisions
  • Trained 40 specialist teachers in Inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education

UPREAD

Funder: USAID

Objectives:

  • To support MIE in developing a comprehensive reading materials development system
  • To develop quality and relevant instructional and supplementary materials for upper primary English and Chichewa

Duration: 5 years (June 2021 – June 2026) | Impact Area: 34 Education Districts

Achievements:

  • Standards 5 and 6 Chichewa and English Learners' Book and Teachers' Guides completed, reviewed and edited
  • Standards 7 and 8 Chichewa and English Learners' Book and Teachers' Guides completed and undergoing review

EQUALS

Funder: World Bank and IDA

Objectives:

  • To improve quality of science and mathematics instruction in community day secondary schools (CDSSs)
  • To increase access to secondary education in selected remote areas
  • To provide teaching and learning materials for secondary school learners including those with special educational needs (SEN)

Duration: Six years (2021–2026) | Impact Area: CDSSs in 34 Education districts

Budget: 90 million USD (with MK600 million allocated for teaching and learning materials for Inclusive education)

Achievements:

  • Supported learners with SEN with materials for learning
  • Provided desktop computers, projectors, scanners, wheelchairs, crutches, sound recorders, UPS, laptop computers
