2024 Annual Education Joint Sector Review (JSR) High-Level Meeting

Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima has stated that her ministry remains committed to advancing several key priority areas collectively identified during the 2024 Annual Education Joint Sector Review (JSR) Meeting.

Speaking at a high-level meeting between the Ministry of Education and development partners in the education sector in Lilongwe, on Friday, the minister emphasised that the priorities and strategies endorsed at the JSR set a strong foundation for a vibrant education sector in the country.

“As we leave here, I urge each one of us to maintain focus and momentum in turning these plans into tangible outcomes for every Malawian child and educator," she said.

The minister also noted that the stakeholders' participation during the JSR deliberations over the past two days and during the high-level meeting reflected a shared purpose in working towards the fulfillment of the National Education Sector Investment Plan (NESIP 2020-2030) and Malawi 2063.

“I am encouraged by the outcomes of the 2024 JSR, where stakeholders from across the education sector convened to assess our progress, identify challenges, and shape our priorities for the future,” she said.

This, she added, underscores a collective commitment to transforming education in Malawi into an effective, efficient, and resilient system capable of preparing learners for a rapidly evolving global landscape.

The minister then called for sustained support and partnership in key priorities such as support for education in emergencies, school Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), expanding access to secondary education, investing in teacher development, and strengthening data analytics to empower evidence-based decision-making.

The 2024 Annual Education Joint Sector Review Meeting highlighted key achievements and collaboration across education levels, including infrastructure development and expanded access to textbooks under Basic Education, expanded access and reduced barriers leading to increased transition rate.

Ongoing teacher recruitment under Secondary Education, establishment of continuous professional development framework for teachers under teacher Education, infrastructure expansion, partnerships, research and innovation growth under Higher Education.
