The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the teaching profession as a key step towards achieving Malawi’s aspirations under Malawi 2063.
Minister of Education, Science and Technology Hon. Bright Msaka SC said Malawi cannot achieve its Malawi 2063 aspirations without strengthening the teaching profession and ensuring teachers are well prepared, supported and professionally developed.
Msaka made the remarks in a ministerial statement marking World Teachers’ Day 2026, which is being commemorated under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”
He said teachers are at the centre of the country’s human capital development because they shape the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes of children and young people who will form Malawi’s future workforce.
Msaka added that all professionals, including doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, entrepreneurs and public servants, begin their journey with a teacher, making teachers indispensable to the development of a strong workforce.
He said Government therefore remains committed to strengthening teacher education, Continuous Professional Development, professional standards and systems that support effective teaching and learning.
He further said respect for teachers must extend beyond schools and be reflected in homes, communities and national institutions, while teachers themselves should uphold professionalism, integrity, dedication and commitment.
Msaka said Malawi’s pursuit of a productive, skilled and resilient population requires teachers and teacher educators to be respected, supported, professionally developed and empowered to fulfil their responsibilities.
The 2026 World Teachers’ Day commemoration also marks 60 years since the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, providing an opportunity to reflect on progress in strengthening the teaching profession and challenges that remain.
